This file separates the possible existence of detector technology from the different questions of current accuracy, address specificity, warrant use and whether the basis for entry can later be examined.
Can current TV detection equipment reliably identify television reception at a particular address, and can the underlying result be meaningfully examined when it contributes to a search warrant?
A secret method can still work. Secrecy, however, prevents independent public assessment of method, error rate and limits. Unknown is recorded as unknown, not treated as proof that the system works or that it fails.

No primary public dataset has yet been identified in this project that supplies contemporary false-positive, false-negative and address-specificity results.
As at 1 August 2026, an open-source search of BAILII, SCTS judgments, the National Archives case-law service and public web results using the terms “TV detector”, “detector van”, “section 366” and “detection evidence” did not identify a reported UK decision from the preceding ten years in which the detector method and accuracy were examined. This was not a subscription-citator search and does not prove that no such decision or unreported warrant proceeding exists.
What physical signal or observable effect does each current detector design measure?
Can the equipment distinguish reception at one dwelling from neighbouring premises under realistic urban conditions?
What receiving equipment, display technologies and viewing methods have been included in validation testing?
What is the measured false-positive rate, false-negative rate and uncertainty interval?
Who performs independent validation, and when was the latest validation completed?
What device model, serial number, software version and configuration produced a particular reading?
What calibration, maintenance, fault and service records exist for that device?
What operator training, instructions and contemporaneous notes are required?
What raw output is retained, for how long, and in what original format?
What method connects a detected signal to a particular programme, stream or broadcast?
What interference sources and alternative explanations are tested or excluded?
Has a UK court examined the method, raw data, error rate and operator evidence in the last ten years?
If a reading supports a warrant, what technical material is available to a person later prosecuted using evidence found during the search?
Which organisation owns the detector design, validation record and current technical specification?
If detection material contributes to an application under section 366 of the Communications Act 2003, the statutory test in Scotland is evidence on oath satisfying the sheriff of the listed reasonable grounds and at least one section 366(3) condition. If the eventual prosecution relies only on evidence found during the search, what opportunity exists to examine the detector material that contributed to entry?
What was put before the judicial decision-maker, with what caveats, supporting records and confidence?
Is the detector material retained as part of the warrant and investigation record, even when it is not evidence led at trial?
Could the material weaken the Crown case, strengthen the defence, or expose a challenge to the warrant process?
Scotland and England and Wales have different warrant and criminal procedures. A person affected by a real warrant should obtain advice for that case and jurisdiction. This site does not advise on defeating detection, obstructing entry or interfering with equipment.
The linked blog quotes wording attributed to a 2011 BBC FOI review response. The original disclosure has not been located in a current BBC disclosure log, so it is treated as a research lead rather than verified primary evidence.
The public material identified here does not validate or disprove current detector performance. The answerable questions concern the grounds placed before the warrant decision-maker, the scope of the warrant, retention of the technical material and the route for case-specific advice or challenge.
